Sweet Charity goes on without Applegate

Sweet Charity will go on - but standby Charlotte d’Amboise will open the musical on Broadway, not its injured star Christina Applegate, according to producer Barry Weissler.

“I love Christina, and I didn’t want this to happen,” Weissler said. “Christina will heal, and when she does, we will put her back in the show.” He was not certain when that would be.

Weissler, the veteran producer of such hit revivals as Chicago, Annie Get Your Gun and Grease, made the announcement as the musical moved to Boston where it begins performances Friday with d’Amboise for 10-day run.

Applegate broke her right foot March 11 during a performance at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre, but she continued to play for about 20 minutes before the show was stopped. After a short delay, Applegate’s understudy, Dylis Croman, took over the role, and the performance resumed.
